One of the great resources we have here in the Panhandle is the Panhandle Butterfly House. Located at the foot of the Navarre Bridge, it’s a great place to spend some time with your children. They have a couple of nice parks by the butterfly house. a pond, a splash pad that is open seasonally, and of course the actual butterfly house. During the season, they tag and release about 100 butterflies a week. Also, about this time of year they have a celebration to raise awareness and donations for the Butterfly House.
This year was the 20th Anniversary celebration, and they definitely went all out!
The girls got to fill out a butterfly passport book. We went from station to station learning about butterflies, which also included a trip to the butterfly house. Since they plant a lot of butterfly friendly plants all around the house, you can spot plenty of local varieties all around.
There were also crafts and games available, and we had a great visit to the park!
It was a great day – I highly recommend visiting the park if you are in the area. Be sure they are open if you come in the winter, since they do close during some of the winter months. They will also be building new facilities soon with heating and cooling which will allow for longer hours.
