Here are a few tips this summer for fun things to do – what do you like to do in the summer months?

Sea shell mobile (Crafts with Found Objects)

It’s always great when you can make items with objects in your backyard. Since we’re right by the Gulf, I’ve decided that we’ll make a seashell mobile this year! I’m super-excited about gathering shells with Little Miss over the summer for this project. We’ll also probably use some bamboo to hang them from – another found item.

Non-toxic sunscreen

Did you know that your skin is your largest organ? So of course, you want to make sure that you aren’t putting anything toxic on it. Fortunately, there are a ton of non-toxic sunscreens to choose from these days. We use a lotion with SPF 15 daily, and then put on the heavier stuff any time we’re going to play outside.

Planting seeds

New growth just seems to go hand and hand with summer. Use seeds to get your child interested in planting, growing, and eating vegetables! We’re currently attempting to grow an avocado from seed. It’s so easy to do, and fun.

Take a 20 oz soda bottle and cut a little less than halfway down. Flip the top over, and fill until the top part has a little bit of water in it. Take the avocado pit and place inside, with the “flat” part facing down. Be patient, and wait. With any luck yours will sprout – it can take a month! Ours definitely has some stuff going on inside, and it’s fun to check out the seed and see what’s going on.  I hope to post pictures soon – my computer is not cooperating right now!

You can also let them plant their very own garden with their favorite vegetables. It’s so fun to be able to walk outside and get fresh food to eat!

  1. I love the idea of the Sea Shell Mobile. Although we don’t live by the ocean we still have plenty of sea shells around the house to make one with. This will be fun to do with my grandchildren. I also made a sand jar with little sea shells in it too.
